As regulatory expectations continue to evolve, the Omega-3 industry is placing increased focus on Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons (MOH); chemically stable molecules that persist in the environment and can accumulate in tissues of living organisms. MOH are typically subdivided into saturated (MOSH) and aromatic (MOAH) hydrocarbons.

In 2023, European Commission (EC) flagged that it may set a maximum limit for MOAH in oils and fats. This lenghty regulatory process has concluded on May 13 of this year with an amendment to Regulation (EU) 2023/915 setting maximum limits to certain foodstuffs, including fish oils, from early 2027.
