EU Health Claims

EPA/DHA Omega-3 Fatty Acids
and authorized EFSA Claims

There are several positive scientific opinions approved and supported by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on health claims for recommended daily intake that address EPA and DHA fatty acids as a vital nutrient. There are six Article 13 claims for EPA and/or DHA of which the three most recent ones authorize a higher dosage claims of 2-3 g of EPA and/or DHA. In addition there are three Article 14 claims for childrens’ development and health.

The new approved EFSA claims are targeting Omega-3 Cardiovascular health and these are:


  • DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels
  • DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure

  • DHA & EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride concentrations

These claims will come into effect in December 2013.
